Sheik took office after the death of his brother in September, while Kuwait was facing a serious liquidity crunch on account of low oil price and the COVID virus. Two thirds of law makers in the parliament have already lost their seats as opposition candidates made gains that could harm government efforts to make fiscal reform and take them out of this economic crisis. Kuwait, whose economy is worth $140 billion, is facing a deficit of $46 billion just this year. Sheikh’s plan is to pass a bill that would allow Kuwait to tap international debt markets.

This article is important because not only does it show Kuwait’s efforts to escape this economic crisis, but it identifies how the oil industry isn’t this economic security blanket in the middle east that a lot of people believe it is, just like any other economy, countries in the middle east are still capable of approaching an economic depression and it is necessary to find another source of economic success. Kuwait has the most open political system in the middle east, which makes trade and international affairs more acceptable with other, more democratic nations. This economic issue may force the rest of the middle east to question how stable the oil industry actually is, and hopefully lead them to further cooperation with the rest of the world. I do believe given Kuwait’s open political system they will have a variety of perspectives and ideas to escape this crisis.

Given Kuwait’s geographic location, it can use Geopolitics as a means of recovering from the economic deficit that it has gotten itself into. If Kuwait was not bordering the Persian Gulf it would be almost impossible to conduct international relations with its neighbors, as Kuwait is an ally of the US. Having direct access to the Persian Gulf gives Kuwait trade opportunities with countries like Qatar, UAE, Saudi Arabia, and even some Asian countries that conduct business in the gulf. Geopolitics is defined as the use of a country’s geography as an element of power, this concept is absolutely applicable to the issue that Kuwait currently faces. Having trade opportunities across the Persian Gulf can give Kuwait a larger variety of relations, and even trade opportunities with Asian countries through the new Belt Road route.

Link: https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2020/12/15/kuwait-emir-tells-parliament-reform-needed-stop-disputes Kuwait’s leader Sheikh Nawaf al-Ahmad al-Sabah recently made it noticeable to his new parliament that comprehensive reforms are vital to get the country out of its worst economic crisis in decades.
