Out of 193 votes, Egypt received 170. The purpose of the PBC is to promote peace in conflicted areas. It contains 31 members. Mohamed Edris, Egypt’s U.N ambassador, states that the large amount of votes Egypt received shows the community’s confidence in the country’s efforts. Edris also added that Egypt played a huge role in the establishment of the UN peacebuilding architecture (PBA) back in 2005. This program has similar associations with the PBC. He also highlighted Egypt’s legacy in peacebuilding, mentioning their work in relations with the African Union and the UNSC. Africa has been a big part of the PBC’s “agenda.”

This vote proves how the community approves of Egypt’s participation in the PBC. Given the history Egypt has in the PBC and African Union relations, they perfectly deserve to keep their membership. The Peace commission in the U.N is voted by the General Assembly (UNGA). The UNGA almost had a unanimous decision, short by 23 votes. This proves the statement that Edris mentioned, Egypt is popular and well qualified for the vote. In 2021, Egypt could continue to make exceptional contributions to the PBC, which could cause their approval to increase, improving their chances to retain the membership in future years.

The UN’s existence and creation of commissions falls under the “international institutions” theory of the liberal perspective of international relations. The purpose is to promote peace and interdependence between countries. Interdependence improves peace because countries will not want to attack a country that they have beneficial relations with. The U.N also supports the core of reciprocity, which relies on reciprocal contributions between members and reliance on IGO’s and NGO’s.

Article Link Egypt was re-elected for member of the United Nations Peacebuilding Commission (PBC).
