This increase enrichment increase has raised concerns globally because it is edging towards the 90% purity needed to create a nuclear weapon. Germany, France and Britain have urged Iran to stop enriching uranium as Iran strays from the 2015 deal. Tehran has claimed that Iran is not aiming to develop nuclear weapons but the European Union is not convinced, the EU warned that a stray from the nuclear deal would come with “serious nuclear non-proliferation implications.” The three European countries also claimed that Iran’s actions risks ruining potential return to diplomacy with the US under President Elect Joe Biden’s administration.

I personally cannot take this increase in uranium enrichment as anything else but an attempt to create nuclear weapons. This is not only concerning for the US but many countries in the Middle East that are on bad terms with Iran, like Israel, because who knows what Iran would do with this advanced type of weaponry. This could cause major chaos in the Middle East because if Iran were to obtain nuclear weapons, it would inevitably start a nuclear arms raise beginning with Saudi Arabia, Iran’s main enemy. This potential nuclear arms raise would then become an international conflict with countries like the US, who is allies with Israel and Saudi Arabia.

This is also frightening for the Middle East given Iran’s regional power, being tier 1 of the regional power scale Iran has much influence over most Middle Eastern countries. It also doesn’t help that the Middle East is a shatterbelt zone- regions that are deeply divided internally. This division among Middle Eastern countries makes a potential nuclear weapons race much worse than a race between countries in different regions. A nuclear weapons race in the Middle East is truly the worst possible case scenario for everyone involved. The amount of competition in shatterbelt regions makes any sort of conflict ten fold.

Link: https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2021/1/6/iran-nuclear-move-has-significant-risks-france-germany-uk On Tuesday Iran announced that they have increased the rate of uranium refining to 20% purity, which is the largest break since the nuclear deal they made in 2015 with world powers.
