This past week two French soldiers were on a reconnaissance and intelligence-gathering mission in the eastern region of Menaka when their vehicle was hit by an improvised explosive device (IED). The explosion occurred just three days after other troops from France were killed in the same way. The armed group known as the Group to Support Islam and Muslims (GSIM), stated that it “detonated an explosive device” as the vehicle was passing. There are now 50 French deaths in the West African nation region since France first joined the fight in 2013 to diminish the number of armed groups. The GSIM also stated that they killed 100 civilians this past weekend in western Niger. French President Emmanuel Macron said a year ago that the Islamic State in the Greater Sahara is the number one threat in the Sahel region. With GSIM growing rapidly in the last year France’s Barkhane force commander Marc Conruyt said that GSIM was the most dangerous in the region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
With Al-Qaeda still being a threat even after Osama Bin-Laden’s death in 2011, it shows how powerful these terrorist organizations can become and how long they can reign terror on the world for. I believe that the United Nations needs to take action and deploy troops into these regions because just one world power and a few small states can not deal with the complexity of the terrorist organizations. With the United States bombarded with different countries and different problems all over the world, Al-Qaeda is a small fraction to what they have to deal with. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
From a theoretical perspective, France has done a lot in its power in order to ensure security for the region. The difficult task is determining who is in a organization and where they are meeting. While killing a group of people may solve it for a short time period, it does not solve the long time goals of the United Nations to maintain international peace and security. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
