Both countries have funded over the region where Ethiopian farmers cultivate fertile land claimed by Sudan. Ethiopia has now accused Sudan of pushing their forces further into the contested border region that has been the site of deadly clashes in recent weeks. This comes after Sudan accused Ethiopia of ambushing Sudanese troops along the border in early December. Ethiopia has now claimed that Sudan’s military had “organised attacks by using heavy machine guns” and that “many civilians have been murdered and wounded”. Sudan’s information minister and government spokesman Feisal Mohamed Saleh claimed that Sudan did not want war with Ethiopia, but its forces would respond to any aggression.

There are obvious tensions between the two countries of Ethiopia and Sudan, and it seems that pretty soon these tensions are about to break. Both countries seem to blame the other for the casualties that happen along the border. Neither country seems to be willing to work with the other, and these tensions can only go on for so long before something gives. Both Ethiopia and Sudan are already experiencing casualties from ambushes and attacks from the other country, and it will only be a matter of time before they go into a full out war. Sudan has already threatened Ethiopia with war if they continue with their acts of aggression, and Ethiopia doesn’t seem to be backing down from defending their own country.

If Ethiopia and Sudan were to end up going to war, I am not sure if the United States would get involved. I know the United States does have good relations with Sudan and are currently working on implementing their own agenda in their country. In class we have been discussing why countries do what they do and why they involve themselves in certain wars that are not their own. I believe that Ethiopia and Sudan going to war would not benefit the United States so if such a thing were to happen the United States would help Sudan out so that their own personal agenda isn’t put at risk.

Link to article: https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2021/1/12/ethiopia-warns-sudan-over-border-dispute Ethiopia and Sudan share a (994 mile) frontier, the al-Fashqa region.
