This announcement could complicate the new US administration efforts to restart diplomacy with Iran, which has ties to the Houthis. “The designations are intended to hold Ansar Allah accountable for its terrorist acts, including cross-border attacks threatening civilian populations, infrastructure and commercial shipping,” Pompeo said in a statement. These designations could also create legal impediments for the United Nations, who is trying to restart political talks to end the war between the Houthis and a Saudi-Emirati-led military coalition. Many nations do not agree with the Trump administration’s decision, but hopefully the Biden administration can come in and negotiate with Yemen and the Houthi group.

The Trump administration is just trying to go out of their way, again, to make Biden’s agenda harder to be seen through. The terrorist designation would continue to complicate peace efforts by the Biden administration with Iran. Other nations and other high officials also believe that declaring Yemen’s Houthi rebels as a terrorist group does more harm than good. This declaration will just make negotiations with anyone in the region all the more harder than it already would be, and aid groups also believe that this move will also impede efforts to help Yemen with the world’s largest humanitarian crisis.

All everyone wants in the world is prosperity and peace. War, terrorism, and a dying population does not enable any peace or prosperity. In class we have talked about the Collective Goods Problem, which is the problem of shared interests and conflicting interests. The only shared interests between the United States and Yemen is to relieve their hunger and to have peace, and the United States declaring the Yemen’s Houthis as a ‘terrorist’ group takes all of that off the table. Especially with the Biden administration wanting to establish a peace deal with Iran, these declarations just put any pending negotiations two steps back, which does not help anyone. Hopefully the Trump administration does not do any lasting damage that the Biden administration can not come back and fix.

Link to article: https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2021/1/11/us-designating-yemens-houthis-a-terrorist-group Just ten days left until president-elect Joe Biden takes office, the Trump administration claims that the United States will designate Yemen’s Houthi rebels as a terrorist group.
