These protests come in realisation of the financial disaster plaguing the Lebanese for the past five months and continues to today. The financial struggle began when the Lebanese government resigned after an explosion occurred in the port that killed over two hundred people and left approximately six thousand wounded. The lack of a government has left the country in horrible condition monetarily. The value of their currency has declined 90% with 25% of that just in the past few weeks. Currently, 15,000 lebanese pounds is the equivalent of one U.S. dollar. The financial crisis is destroying the public’s ability to purchase basic necessities, hence the protests. A few countries including the US have commented on the importance of the reunification of the Lebanese government but no support was mentioned. It goes without saying that this financial disaster is very upsetting as well as concerning. It is really shocking how bad Lebanon’s situation has gotten in just a matter of months. The description of how many pounds equal one dollar was really eye opening to me just because inflation is not a problem that you hear about so extremely in the US. When I read this article it reminded me of the Yemen humanitarian crisis, with such tangible humanitarian struggle and malnourishment present. This comparison makes me worried for the Lebanese population considering that the Yemeni people have been facing similar issues for six years now. This crisis also made me think of realist theory of international relations, as the United States chose to comment on what the now broken Lebanese government should do without actually offering support in any way due to their lack of sufficient national interest in the country.

https://apnews.com/article/financial-markets-financial-crisis-beirut-lebanon-652a3e7321ae878ec3385594bfbda5bf Intense protests broke out in Lebanon’s capital of Beirut on Tuesday.
