After the death of the dictator Muammor Gaddafi in 2011 during the height of the Arab Spring uprisings, Libya has suffered ceaseless violence and division. With these recent UN-sponsored talks, an interim government has finally formed in Libya, with plans of a democratic election by the end of the year. As part of the interim government, Mohammed al-Menfi will lead the three-man Presidential Council, while Abdulhamid Dbeibeh will serve as the acting Prime Minister.

Yet, while there is indeed much hope to derive from these recent developments, the current state of Libya is still defined by great internal conflict. Even if this interim government holds out until the close of the year, and even if the planned democratic election is successful, Libya will still face continued conflict, as the various fractions tearing the nation apart are not particularly eager to lose their regional power. Add on top of this the close interest and various allegiances of foreign powers, such as Russia, Turkey, and Iran, and one finds that Libya looks awfully close to the definition of a shatterbelt. This is not to bring pessimism into what is, to be sure, a positive development for the country; however, the unstable reality of the situation must be acknowledged.

(Feb 6th)

https://www.reuters.com/article/uk-libya-security-un/new-libya-interim-government-agreed-in-u-n-talks-idUSKBN2A60BI After 10 years of anarchy and chaos, Libya is finally close to forming a unified government under the provision of the United Nations.
