This is the most recent in a long string of cross-border air and drone attacks conducted by the Yemeni Houthis against Saudi Arabia, including attacks that hit this exact same facility as recently as last November. As it stands now, the Saudi government has yet to acknowledge the missile attacks on Thursday.

These attacks from the Houthis are part of a concerted cross-border military response after the last six years of the Saudi military campaign in Yemen. According to the Saudi military, most of these air strikes from the Houthis have been intercepted.

The ongoing conflict in Yemen is often perceived as a proxy war between Saudia Arabia and Iran, and while there is some truth to this, it is also a simplification, perhaps even a distortion. It is not accurate to frame the Houthis as mere puppets of Tehran, a fact which the Houthis are eager to emphasize.

As the now six-year conflict trudges on, it must be asked just how much longer Saudi Arabia can sustain its military efforts in Yemen. The Saudis initially intervened in 2015, after the Shiite Houthi rebels overthrew the then-standing Yemeni government, expecting to swiftly quash the rebels. This obviously did not turn out as the Saudis expected. With continued cross-border pressure from the Houthis, it is hard to imagine the Saudis rationally continuing their offensive operations in Yemen.

(Mar 4)

https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2021/3/4/yemens-houthis-say-they-fired-missile-at-saudi-aramco-site-2 This thursday Houthi authorities claim they fired missiles at a Saudi Aramco oil facility in the city of Jeddah.
