Many people from North Africa have been attempting to migrate to the Gulf states to escape poverty and famine and find work. However, due to COVID-19 and war in Yemen, many of them are trapped in the country, being held in centers where conditions are poor. The Huthis have been capturing these migrants and transferring them to centers in South Yemen, keeping them from completing their move, and trapping them in a war-ridden country. The UN has become involved in helping these migrants, however there are still over 32,000 left in Yemen.

It’s upsetting to think about how these migrants were attempting to flee their country because their living conditions were poor, and ended up just getting stuck in the next country over because the living conditions are even worse there. It’s good to see the UN getting involved, the volume of migrants who are now trapped in Yemen is far too high for anyone not to get involved. It seems to me that Yemen is very unstable and doesn’t need any more issues like 32,000 more people fleeing to their country.

Due to the harsh circumstances these migrants are facing while being trapped in Yemen, and the great number of people trapped, it is easily considered a humanitarian crisis. It is the moral obligation of the UN, an International Global Organization, to help these migrants make it back to their home countries. In liberal theory, it could be argued that the hegemon has an obligation to become involved, since this is a humanitarian crisis, however I don’t think this situation has the urgency to warrant action from the US or other countries.

https://www.reuters.com/article/us-yemen-ethiopia-migrants/ethiopians-head-home-after-yemen-migrant-life-becomes-untenable-idUSKBN2C11EE The UN has begun offering flights to Ethiopian and North African migrants who are currently stuck in Yemen.
