Iran, Egypt, Iraq, and Saudi Arabia accounted for 88% of the 483 reported executions worldwide, according to a report by the human rights group. While the rest of the world was focused on saving people’s lives from a lethal virus, it accuses them of showing “a ruthless and chilling persistence.” China was not included in the global tally, which was the lowest in a decade. Thousands of people are thought to be executed in China each year, but data on the country’s use of the death penalty is classified as a state secret. Secrecy in North Korea and Vietnam also made it impossible to verify reports from those two countries. In its annual report on the use of the death penalty, Amnesty International said on Wednesday that the 483 executions reported in 18 countries in 2020 marked a decrease of 26% from the 657 executions reported in 2019 and a 70% drop from a peak of 1,634 executions in 2015. The total number in the Middle East decreased from 579 in 2019 to 437 in 2020. This was largely due to an 85% reduction in reported executions in Saudi Arabia, where 27 were carried out, and a 50% reduction in Iraq, where 45 were carried out. The decreases, however, were overshadowed by a 300 percent increase in Egypt, which executed 107 people and became the world’s third most frequent executioner, according to the study. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Iran is the top country in the middle east with the highest death penalties and could be the leading country in the world without data from China, North Korea, or Vietnam. Many middle and higher level crimes in Iran can lead a person to be executed in countries with the death penalty. Sometimes in some countries like North Korea, a person can be executed for having a South Korean movie dvd. Its shocking to see that while here in the US people are going back and forth over the death penalty with some wanting to ban it, there are other countries who openly use it and thousands of people. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
Link: https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-middle-east-56817706 Four of the world’s five top executioners in 2020 were Middle East states, Amnesty International says.
