The crisis in Yemen has left 20 million citizens dependent on humanitarian assistance and has many suffering from widespread famine. The UN conference in March had sought to raise $3.85 billion for Yemen, but raised only $1.35 billion; the Biden administration only contributed $19 million which was far less than expected and many consider it less than the United States ‘fair share’. The Biden administration withdrew support from the offensive in Yemen and delisted Yemen’s Houthi movement as a foreign terrorist organization which was thought to be impacting aid.

Yemen is an unfortunate example of the collective goods problem. A realist might insist that the United States is a sovereign nation with no technical responsibility for assisting additionally in this humanitarian crisis. If providing aid is not in the national interest of the US, then it may be in the best interest of the US to refuse to send more money. Yemen is amid a crisis, and it is easy for other nations to disregard it in the pursuit of their own interests. There is no international government that solves these problems, which is often why collective good problems persist and Yemenis are getting the rough end of the deal.

The impact this has on Yemen is significant. There is a genuine concern for the population that relies on this aid to live. The United Nations has recognized the massive famine and made an attempt as an international governmental organization to rally countries like the US to contribute. Unfortunately, the UN wasn’t able to meet their goal. The biggest difficulty now is getting other countries to provide money given that these sovereign nations have no actual responsibility. When money is power, it is difficult to get other countries to help.

Article: https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2021/5/4/us-legislators-call-on-biden-to-help-raise-aid-for-yemen United States Senators have been urging the Biden administration to contribute more humanitarian aid to Yemen.
