This meeting took place after a major military attack which worked to recapture the last rebel bastion in southern Syria. Additionally, Jordan’s King Abdullah praised Russian President Vladimir Putin during a visit to Moscow in August over Russian troops supposedly stabilizing the country. This occurred after thousands of rebels, who originally received support and arms that were funneled through Jordan, relinquished their weapons through surrender deals that were brokered through Moscow. During that time, Russia had guaranteed to Jordan, the US, and Israel, that it would prevent Iranian-backed fighters from gaining more influence in the area.

It is significant that officials from Syria and Jordan are conversing in the first place as this is the first time they have met to discuss anything since the war originally broke out 10 years ago. Furthermore, it is unusual for Jordan to be praising the Russians as Russia and the Syrian government have been in opposition to the US and Jordan throughout most of the war. These events are likely taking place because of the sheer amount of Syrian refugees that have been displaced into Jordan, over 650,000, which has placed severe strain on the country across all facets. Also, as the Syrian government continues to turn the tide of battle in their favor, it is reasonable that Jordan would seek to ameliorate the relations between itself and the Syrian government, as well as its ally Russia, since the Syrian government now has control over the border with Jordan and is not in as much of a precarious position anymore. Russia is a key player in keeping Iranian-backed fighters from expanding their power, and it is in Jordan’s best interest to keep Iran and its fighters from intruding into Jordan or its ally Israel.

There are many topics discussed in this article that directly relate to International Relations, with the major theme of this article pertaining to International Security, which the two national officials were focused on discussing. Additionally, many non-state actors play a key role in this situation, such as the many rebel and terrorist groups that the Syrian government is focused on combatting. Finally, the Principle of Reciprocity is demonstrated here because the governments of Syria and Jordan are now working to foster healthy relations between each other in the hopes that both countries can gain relative stability and deter future problems between each other, even though the states had been opposed to each other and uncooperative for quite some time.

Link to article: https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2021/9/20/syrian-military-chief-makes-rare-visit-to-jordan Syria’s Defense Minister and Chief of Staff Ali Ayyoub met with Jordanian army head Lieutenant-General Yousef Hunaiti this past Sunday for the purpose of discussing issues of mutual interest such as border control and “fighting terrorism,” as well as to strengthen future coordination over general problems.
