At the 76th session of the UNGA, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani spoke upon the stressful and critical state the Afghani people are currently in. A direct quote from him states, “It’s also important to continue dialogue with the Taliban… boycotting them would only lead to polarisation and reactions, whereas dialogue could be fruitful.” Since the US’s pullout from Afghanistan, Qatar has helped many foreigners escape the Taliban rulers while also supporting operations at the Kabul Airport, with Qatar Airways using their aircraft to fly in help and fly out people with passports. The emir also discussed cybersecurity, pandemic issues, and conflicts in Yemen, Syria, and Libya. He also spoke out about the Israel vs. Palestine issue and urged the community to take responsibility for a peaceful settlement. Lastly, he also addressed hosting the biggest US airbase in the region, which could possibly be used for Iran and Americans to touch base and maintain good relations.

I think that Sheikh Tamim is correct; continuing deadly fights with the Taliban might just be overkill in a way that will lead to many innocent lives lost. However, I can’t think of a way to communicate peacefully with terrorists. While reading this article, it made me realize how many different countries view the Afghanistan issue in different ways. One thing that I liked about the article was the summarization of the UNGA because it is something I had been researching for the class. It also brought in some good historical context upon mentioning the 50th anniversary of Qatar’s UN membership. Knowing that Qatar has only been a part of the UN for 50 years is important because it gives you context into how much they actually know and have experienced when it comes to foreign and political affairs.

This relates to class because it touches base on the Israel vs. Palestine issue, conflicts in Yemen, Syria, and Libya, as well as pulling out of Afghanistan (and Afghanistan rule as a whole). Also, the mention of the UNGA relates to class because we had discussed the United Nations, as well as their General Assembly. Another thing that relates to class is the COVID-19 Pandemic, which is something that is being discussed worldwide. One word that we went over in class that is featured in the article is ‘state’. All in all, this article relates to our class because it goes over a current event that is relevant to the world.

Link to article: https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2021/9/21/unga-qatar-emir-urges-world-engage-with-taliban The Emir of Qatar has stated that he believes the world leaders should stay engaged with the Taliban as a way to resolve all conflicts peacefully.
