The four officers were accused of kidnapping, torturing, and muder of Giulio Regeni, a doctoral student from Italy. The ruling came from the fact that if the trial were to continue, the defendants would be tried in absentia, constituting what the judge believed to be an unfair trial. The prosecution argued that Egyptian authorities had proven to be uncooperative, ignoring 39 out of 64 requests for information as well seeking to prevent the security officers from knowing that they had been charged. The defense’s argument was that the prosecution did not have sufficient information and that the defendants are unaware as to what they are accused of. While that argument was overruled by a preliminary hearing in may, with the judge citing media coverage of the investigation, the decision was overturned by judge Capri, forcing the prosecution to locate the suspects.

From my perspective, these events are occurring because of the right to a fair trial in Italy, as well as the relationship between Egypt and Italy. Italy is Egypt’s largest trade partner in the E.U., and the relationship between the two countries has been strained over the years following Regeni’s murder as well as the detaining of Patrick Zaki. While both of these examples seem irrational, the Egyptian government is doing these actions out of fear of an uprising. Sisi has been president for 7 years, with a non-democratic election in 2018 proving his authoritarian rule. Egypt’s government under Sisi has mismanaged the energy crisis in Egypt as well as become widely known for human rights abuses. The Egyptian government fears its citizens turning against it, and as such are willing to go to extreme lengths such as torture and killing to prevent this from happening.

This ties into international relations through international philosophies as well as the realist perspective. The behavior of the judge is an example of someone who is a universalist, believing that everyone no matter the crime deserves a fair trial. The prosecutors actions are an example of pragmatism, saying that the circumstances of the trial meant that they were unable to have the suspects present in court. Egypt’s actions with the murdering of Regini support the beliefs of realists, in that a state is so focused on preserving power, it is willing to hurt diplomatic ties with other countries in order to protect its authority over its citizens.

Link to article: https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2021/10/14/egypt-italy-regeni-murder-trial-suspended On Thursday, October 14, Italian judge Antonella Capri ruled that the trial of four Egyptian officers would be suspended.
