Though unconfirmed, many are speculating that it was an Israeli sniper. The man who was killed, Midhat Saleh, lived along the Israeli frontier in the occupied Golan Heights. Israeli media had been reporting that he was assisting the Iranian military against Israel, which would give reason for them killing him. Though it is still not clear whether or not Israel was even involved in Saleh’s death, if they were, then it sends a clear message to both Iran and Syria, this message being that they have many options to protect themselves and are constantly watching.

If Israel was involved in this killing, then it could further exacerbate tensions between them and Iran and Syria. Relations have never been very good between Israel and Iran in recent times, so it is unclear whether or not this will actually have any large impact. However, Israel has openly opposed Iran’s placement of its military in neighboring Syria. Therefore, it doesn’t really matter if Israel is involved or not since Iran will probably view the situation the same either way–if Sahel really was involved with their military. With Israel being backed by the US though, it is unlikely that Iran will make any serious retaliations considering the amount of escalation that could occur.

The theme of international security heavily undertones this situation. If Israel holds culpability, then the main reason would have been as a response to perceived provocation through Iran’s military entrenchment alongside Israel in Syria. More so, Iran and Syria surely feel threatened by Israel’s presence, which would likewise give reason to their involvement along Israel’s border. Three different states are directly involved in this situation, and Midhat Saleh could be described as a non-state actor. The principle of reciprocity is clearly outlined in this situation considering the fact that Israel could have sniped Saleh in response to Iran’s military encroachment, which in turn could have been a response to Israeli air attacks on Iranian arms shipments and military targets in Syria in the past few years.

Link to article: https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2021/10/17/shooting-in-syria-could-mark-new-phase-in-israeli-campaign A Syrian lawmaker was killed on Saturday by a sniper.
