A topic of controversy in the rally was the United States’ position on the issue, supporting peace and a cease fire in the crumbling country. Abiy’s supporters denounce the US government for their position as they claim they need to continue fighting. The United States said that the violations of human rights in Ethiopia would cause them to remove the country from the African Growth and Opportunity Act trade agreement. For upwards of a year, Tigrayans have faced massacres killing thousands, sexual violence, regionwide famine and millions of refugees and internally displaced persons caused allegedly by Abiy’s government and his followers. Despite the encouragement of a ceasefire from multiple international powers, like the United States, the UN Security Council, the African Union, Kenya, and Uganda, Abiy’s government has committed to keep fighting to “secure the country.”

Conflict in Ethiopia has been ongoing since the beginning of time due to the large population and the diverse ethnic groups encompassed in its borders. Although international powers have encouraged conversation between the government, ethnic leaders, and world leaders to begin the repeartation of the state, both sides show no signs of being interested in cooperation. As the TPLF gets closer and closer to their ultimate goal of taking over the capital and Abiy’s forces and supporters say they will not stop fighting, the opinions of other countries seem to have less significance and there is not a great likelihood of any real solution anytime soon.

In attempts to help the issue, the United States has suspended Ethiopia from the African Growth and Opportunity Act trade agreement that is dedicated to increasing African countries’ access to United States markets. Due to the human rights violations such as government induced famine in the Tigray region, arbitrary killings and arrests and much more, the United States is forced to take a hardline approach to the situation as the removal from the AGOA will hurt the country economically. In a realist perspective, this should help to incite cooperation as economics is one of the most important factors in a country’s power and greatly influences the states national interest. With this, the national interest of Ethiopia may shift as the country continues to suffer. Along with the cooperation between Ethiopian officials and the United States.

Link to article: https://www.france24.com/en/africa/20211107-tens-of-thousands-rally-in-ethiopia-to-support-govt-campaign-against-rebels-denounce-us As the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) begins to make more and more threats on the capital, a government organized rally took place in Addis Ababa on Sunday to support the Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and the Ethiopian defense forces.
