This applies to drone attacks and combat operations, which the US military have recently implemented, mostly in Afghanistan , killing civilians while operating. Austin ordered an action plan due within 90 days from the Joint chief of staffs detailing how they will protect civilians and improve responses in future operations. This comes after a drone strike in Kabul in August killed 10 civilians, which included 7 children, drew outrage and criticism. A New York Times investigation also recently released a report that shows US wars in the middle East have been handled with &#8216;Faulty targeting&#8217; killing over 1,000 citizens. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Analysis: I believe this is a good move on Austin&#8217;s part. Killing civilians in war largely draws a lot of negative attention and criticism, and has made Afghanistan feel even more enraged amid war and turmoil. The US military has been criticized by many world actors in their handling of civilian harm, and their lack thereof. This should bring some improved handling of civilian affairs and harm. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">How does this relate to IR: How world powers handle affairs in the shatterbelt regions of the world is a common theme in IR, and something that is very beneficial to know about.
