These shipments of munitions were being stored in Latakia for the past month in order to supply the Iranian backed Hezbollah organization which Iran is using to support the Syrian government in the civil war. When the munitions were hit it caused a large explosion and fires, however, no casualties have been reported. Despite other sources mentioning that the area hit by the airstrikes were holding munitions, official Syrian news sources claim that the area held “oils and spare parts for cars.” Israel also claims that the airstrikes were a defensive action conducted in order to counter Iran’s increased influence in Syria and protect their citizens.

This is an important event because Syria is in a greatly weakened state after being in a state of civil war for nearly eleven years. This means that Israel is able to confidently carry out attacks with aircraft as well as missiles and other means on Syrian territory without fear of Syrian retaliation. This is evidenced by the recent increase of attacks on Syria by Israel including airstrikes on the port of Latakia as in this example. Another important aspect is that Iran has been increasing its support for Syria through weapons shipments and using Hezbollah to help fight for the Syrian government. Israel and Iran being competing regional powers are trying to fight the influence of the other in the region and the Israeli airstrikes are one way they are trying to counter Iranian influence in Syria.

This article relates to class because Syria has been in a state of civil war for over a decade and the regional powers are grappling over influence within Syria by supporting various factions in the civil war. Israel also claims that Syria is letting Iran violate their sovereignty by allowing Iran to give them weapons shipments and by having Hezbollah fight for the Syrian government. At the same time Israel is also violating Syria’s sovereignty by conducting airstrikes and other attacks against Syria, however Syria does not currently have the strength to fight back against Israel.

Article: https://www.reuters.com/world/middle-east/syrian-air-defences-confront-israeli-aggression-latakia-port-syrian-state-tv-2021-12-28/ Israeli airstrikes on the main Syrian port of Latakia scored hits on what was supposedly a shipment of munitions from Iran that were being stored in the port.
