This happen amidst a meltdown of relations between to the two nations. This withdrawal of troops would end a nine year relationship between Mali and France, and the relocation of troops will be a big strategic shift for France and the Sahel region. The shift in relations was mainly driven by the Malian coup, French killing of civilians in an air raid, and the hiring of the Russian PMC The Wagner Group. These factors lead to Mali ultilamley kicking out the french ambassador and the highly suspected withdrawal from the french.

My take on the article is that Russia is trying its hand at dominance in the shatterbelt region of Africa, and specifically the Sahel region. With billions of dollars of untapped resources, other world powers have realized and jumped on the opportunity such as China with their debt trapping. This might be the future because of the catastrophic meltdown of relations in their home region. Another point is that the French are experiencing what the Us experience in Afghanistan all over again. With their presence not really forwarding anything. This was proven as there have been two coups as they’ve withdrawn troops. This shift in focus could allow for more opportunities for the French or a bigger headache if other countries start to fall in the sahel region.

This topic relates to class with the ideas of shatterbelts and transition of power. Africa as a continent is known for being a shelterbelt region because of the perpetual instability because of continuous ethnic, religious, and terrorism wars. This has brought this region to its knees with numerous failed states and no one country or countries being able to quell the chaos. With the French attempted support this proves that even a relevant world power does not have the reasonable means to aid theses countries and it turns bitter really fast. This also deals into different geopolitical phases and geopolitical restructuring with the US shifting away from being a sole hegemonic power to more of different powers vying for dominance such as China. This leads some to think that Phase 5 could come full circle with a multi polar system.

Link to article: https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2022/2/16/macron-set-to-announce-french-withdrawal-from-mali There is an expected announcement of a withdrawal of forces from Mail going to be announced by French President Emanuel Macron.
