This kidnapping took place in Abyan governorate on Friday February 11, 2022. Russell Geekie, a spokesman for the top UN official in Yemen, stated on Saturday that “The United Nations is in close contact with the authorities to secure their release.” Other UN spokespeople, such as Stephane Dujarric, declined answering questions but confirmed knowing about the situation at hand. The official UN office stated that 4 of the 5 abducted staff members were Yemeni nationals. This incident has been marked as a “terrorist operation.”

In my opinion I feel like this abduction may have something to do with the current war in Yemen. With all of the humanitarian issues happening in that area right now I would not be surprised if this abduction has something to do with said issues. Although this is nowhere near an okay way for these issues to be handled, I can see people getting desperate to see improvements. It’s sad that it has gotten to a point that it is so bad in Yemen that people will take such extreme measures to try and force help. Although the kidnapping is not proven to be for that reason, with the death rate doubling since the UN was initially removed, it wouldn’t be too awfully surprising if it did play a part.

This relates back to class because of the involvement of the UN. The United Nations is the closest thing there is to a world government. The goal of the UN is to maintain international peace and security. With the members of the UN being kidnapped, this can pose a threat to international security, especially that involving other staff members of the UN. The UN is currently engaged in what is going on in Yemen hoping to try and bring human rights back to the people who live there. The UN is currently working with the Yemen Government to solve this crime.

Link to article: https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2022/2/13/five-un-staff-abducted-in-southern-yemen-by-unknown-armed-men While returning home from a field mission, 5 United Nation staff members were kidnapped by unknown armed men.
