The talks involved twelve Libyan lawmakers from the east-based parliament and twelve from the high council of state, an advisory board in western Libya capital Tripoli. The talks were brokered by the UN, and the spokesperson from the UN said the officials agreed to meet again in the next month, at the end of Ramadan. The UN itself is involved with the situation to try and create a legislative framework for parliamentary and presidential elections in the country. The talks come after the decade of civil war that has split the country, now vying for unity.

I believe that these talks though are slow coming could be very beneficial to the region. With Libya being such an oil-rich country in said region, if it was united. I know that becoming united is easier said than done, especially since both sides have prisoners detained including a local journalist and at least 10 other people imprisoned by the east. Though I do think that even with the prolonged history on both sides that causes bad blood between the governments. They should ultimately try to unite to better the country and the region around them.

This relates to the international relations class because of the country of Libya’s national interest. If the area was united, the oil reserves would be able to be filled more and more countries would buy from them since there is less risk of the oil being stolen in conflict. Also with the country being split currently, one of the sides seems to be more of an authoritarian power by putting critics into jail or having them gunned down in the streets. Since these also took place because of the UN it is closely connected to the international system, since the UN has a major impact on said system and countries.

https://apnews.com/article/middle-east-africa-religion-elections-egypt-4f88f212513144cf83af97df36328833 After a week-long talk in the Egyptian capital, the rival officials of Libya come out with no agreements on constitutional arrangements for elections.
