This was all halted 6 months ago, with a coup led by the Sudanese military. The military has since been involved in the murders of dozens of protesters, and has imprisoned even more. This, however, has not crushed the pro-democracy movement in Sudan. In fact, many resistance committees have stated that the military crackdown has only strengthened their will to protest and lead Sudan to democracy. The coup resulted in the reinstatement of many members of al-Bashir’s party (the NCP) back into their positions in the government.

The Sudanese government’s condemnation of Israel’s statehood could pose issues for the coup leader, Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, as his military has been working on developing a partnership with the Israeli government. This may cause issues between the relations of the government in power and the coup which placed it back in power. Protests are also being fueled by an uprising hunger crisis in the state, which has put around 20 million people to starve in 2022. The military coup can be blamed for the hunger crisis. When the military took over the government, many foreign countries didn’t wasn’t to support it anymore, leading them to stop sending aid and food over to Sudan. This, unfortunately, impacts the people who have no control over the situation more than it does the actual government.

In connection to class, Sudan has been operating under an authoritarian, one-party system for years, under the former leader Omar al-bashir. The coup took this government out of power, although it was partially reinstated with the military takeover. The state currently does not have strong legeitimacy, as the people did not accept the government and in turn overthrew it. For the time being, they are now in a fight against their government and military, due to a lack of legitimacy.

Link to Article: “Six months since coup, Sudan promises to keep up democracy fight“ After the removal of Sudan’s leader, Omar al-Bashir, Sudan began to see a small democratic transition in its government.
