The Russian government previously boasted approximately 16,000 troop enlistees from Syria, but U.S. analysts have raised doubts over the accuracy of these numbers. Additionally, Russian military general Alexander Dvornikov was named the new commanding officer of the Russian offensive in Ukraine. General Dvornikov led troops in Syria, leading some scholars to believe that his ties with Syria will lead to an increase in Syrian fighters in Russia. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (located in Britain) reports approximately 40,000 Syrians have enlisted, but the accuracy of these statistics is questionable. However, the Associated Press mentions that Russian presence in Syria is decreasing, which does not help Syria’s situation fighting the Islamic State.

Since Russia and Syria are both authoritarian, they are consequently tied together as allies. It doesn’t necessarily surprise me that Russia is recruiting Syrian fighters. From my understanding, Russia is lacking troops with sufficient morale. Because of Russia’s lack of sufficient manpower, they’re turning to Syria to “return the favor” that Russia lent in their fight against the Islamic State. Although I’m not well-versed in the Syrian Civil War, lack of Russian support as well as a transfer of Syrian troops to the European front could be detrimental for Syrian control. I also believe that one of the reasons Russia is struggling militarily is because of the low morale of their troops, whereas Syrian militants are likely to be motivated to fight, for they reportedly volunteered for their assignment. Syria also relies heavily upon Russia for defense purposes; a collapse of Russian functioning would be a serious hit to the Assad regime.

The biggest connection to class in this conflict is the non-conforming sectors of Luhansk and Donetsk. Because Luhansk and Donetsk are on the border of Russia, the two cities are prone to Russian influence, especially because of the large ethnically Russian population in the areas. Additionally, the Ukrainian government does have corruption issues, meaning it is easier for Russia to exert its influence on the non-conforming sectors of Ukraine. However, Ukrainian President Zelensky, backed with a charismatic yet legalistic government, has utilized clever strategies to curb the Russian invasion. Zelensky increases the morale of his constituents and of the international community, similar to one with charismatic legitimacy.

Link to article: https://apnews.com/article/russia-ukraine-putin-islamic-state-group-syria-europe-4ede428219450a58b0439912bc43cc15 With Russia and Syria’s close ties, Syrian fighters under their general Suheil al-Hassan are reportedly entering the ranks of Russian soldiers in the Russo-Ukrainian war.
