Just this past Monday, Al-Aqsa Mosque in the Old City of Jerusalem holds great importance to muslims everywhere as an ancient holy site that opened to worshippers in the year 1035 and it is the second oldest mosque in the world. A major point of contention between Palestine and Israel has arisen since Israeli military forces stormed the Al-Aqsa Mosque on April 15 and arrested hundreds of the Palestinians during their morning prayer during the holy month of Ramadan. The Israeli forces reportedly ambushed the crowd of thousands of worshippers and attacked elderly, children, and paramedics along with what Israel claims was an insurgent mob of Palestinians. Witnesses of the attack say the Israelis were using tear gas and stun grenades against the Palestinian civilians. Both Egypt and Jordan, peaceful neighbors with Israel, have condemned Israel’s actions at the mosque. Al-Aqsa is currently being occupied by Israel and in retaliation, the armed faction of the Hamas, the Ezzedine al-Qassam Brigades, and southern Israeli military bases, including the Iron Dome missile interceptor, have been trading missile attacks in the occupied Gaza Strip. Most recently, Israeli warplanes bombed what they claimed was a facility manufacturing weapons for rebelling Palestinians after surface to air missiles were launched from the Gaza Strip earlier that week, presumably by the Hamas though none of their factions have claimed responsibility for the rockets. While these missiles were shot down by Israel’s missile defense base called the Iron Dome, the Israeli missiles dropped on the manufacturing site in the Gaza Strip did make contact. Luckily, the Palestinian health ministry reported that there were no casualties or injured persons following the strike.

As a struggle that is rooted in two of the oldest religions in the world and one of the oldest places of civilization in the world, this situation of multiple historic ties to one land spelled infighting from the moment an Islamic mosque was built in a city that had been Jewish for thousands of years prior. In fact, the first Jewish holy temple in Jerusalem, built by King Solomon, the son of King David who conquered the city in 1,000 B.C., constructed only around 40 years later circa 957 B.C. and is thought to be the oldest Jewish temple in the world that also gave rise to the synagogues built after as public places of prayer rather than private. This makes the ancient religious conflict between Islamic and Jewish peoples in Israel one of the oldest in the world, though it was exacerbated to the current point mostly due to the more recent Ottoman takeover of the Middle East from the 1500s up until 1917. There is no changing the significance of Jerusalem to Islam and Judaism and this will make it hard for the fight between Israel and Palestine to ever be resolved, though many countries including the United States, Egypt, and Jordan have tried to facilitate peace. Especially with the protests and skirmishes that are already flaring, the further this fight is allowed to continue provoking each side the greater and longer the sentiments of unrest will be.

From a Comparative Government standpoint, the historic core of Israel, Palestine, and Islam is Jerusalem, however it has very different meanings to each. A main conflict between Israel and Palestine is religion, as Israel is primarily a Jewish state and the heartland of Judaism while Palestine is majority muslim yet Jerusalem is unique as both religions originated in the Middle East and Islam has been influencing the city since 638 CE when it was first conquered by the Rashidun Caliphate just 6 years after the death of Muhammad 632 CE. Because of this history and the multiple sacred sites within the city, Jerusalem as a historic core is being split between two groups claiming it as their capital for the very same reason: it is the center of Palestine and of Israel, the oldest place of settlement of for both Palestinians and Israelis and the place where both of their governing influences are felt the strongest.

https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2022/4/18/rocket-from-gaza-into-southern-israel-intercepted Since Israel forcibly took control of the non-recognized state Palestine, there has been sustained unrest and conflict in the region for more than 54 years.
