Recently, tensions between Israel and Palestine have risen at the Al-Aqsa Mosque. The site is religiously sacred to both Islam and Judaism and has been a serious source of contention in previous conflicts. On Friday April 22, Israeli Police and Palestinians skirmished inside the mosque. Hamas accused the Israeli government of instigating the fight by allowing its citizens to break treaty agreements by openly praying in the holy area. Furthermore, Hamas accused Israel of using \u201cexcessive force\u201d against the Palestinians. Israel\u2019s Foreign Minister Yair Lapid denies these allegations and asserts that Israel is committed to continuing the agreement regarding the Al-Aqsa Mosque. Minister Lapid fired back at Hamas, claiming that the organization persuaded young Palestinian men to throw objects at Israeli police. Videos exist showing both Palestinians throwing rocks at Israeli Police and the Israeli Police using tear gas against crowds of Palestinians. In response to the allegations, Israel barred passage between Gaza and Israel, upsetting many Gazans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The situation between Israel and Palestine is likely due to the cyclical aspects surrounding the religious holidays of Passover and Ramadan. While the two entities constantly quarrell, the religious aspects surrounding Passover and Ramadan instigate further violence towards each other, making peace during that time difficult due to jointly-claimed religious sites. The closing of the Gaza pass, while difficult for civilians, is likely expected in the tumultuous regions. While Gaza is home to many, its closing isn\u2019t necessarily a surprise, as disruptions in the area are relatively common. I believe both Israel and Palestine should take actions to deescalate the situation; it\u2019s difficult to pin the blame on a specific country in this situation, specifically because of the long history between the two. I also think it\u2019s interesting to analyze the tensions between Israel and Palestine throughout the Russo-Ukrainian war. European countries, including Russia and Ukraine, are averting their focus from the Middle East to the European front, possibly deescalating those conflicts in some ways.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Historic Core of Israel is paramount to understanding the conflict with Palestine. The redrawing of boundaries after WWI is one of the key reasons these conflicts happen today. As discussed in class, there are varying levels of ecumene in Israel and Palestine. The Negev desert, surrounding Israel, is very sparsely inhabited, limiting the conflict in the region, but also compacting more citizens into a smaller area of land. The Palestinian-claimed regions of Israel could qualify as non-conforming sectors because of the jointly-claimed regions of land. However, the state of Israel has not yet given up on maintaining its rule over Palestinian-claimed land, and has maintained a centralized rule.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
