Wildfires have taken a toll on Lebanon in the past, wildfires have been responsible for 26% loss of trees in the past 20 years. These fires are due to the country’s poor forest management and the rising temperatures, these factors have caused an increase of forest fires in Lebanon this year. However due to Lebanon’s economic crisis emergency services such as firefighters have not been funded, this means the firefighters have no choice but to leave the forests to burn. Due to the country’s lack of response the community including Syrian refugees have taken it upon themselves to put out the country’s fires in order to preserve their farmland and heritage. Khaled Taleb is the person who organized the volunteer team which is helping put out the fire and improve community relations after the 1.5 million Syrian refugees came into Lebanon and Akkar in 2019, “When Syrians joined us to put out fires, we all felt a strong sense of hope that we were part of the same land, and that we can help each other.”

The article shows a small step in the right direction when it comes to relations with the Syrian refugees and the Lebanese community. Syrian refugees have been harassed and unwelcomed by Lebanon since they started seeking refuge. In July, the local community torched a Syrian refugee camp after the two groups got into a dispute. There have also been cases of unlawful arrests and tourture done by the Lebanese military to the Refugees. However this event has brought a relieving sense of community to both parties in this town, it has formed a stronger sense of unity and broke the barrier. “We drink the same water, live under the same trees and eat the same bread,” says one of the volunteer members.

The two groups’ long standing conflict with one another being looked past when they realized they both now live on the same land shows how nationality and culture connects people, which we have talked about in class. However they were both interested in the same cause of protecting Lebanon’s people, land, and its history which brought them together. Once they both realized they live on the same land and now live in the same community whether they welcomed it or not, they are now a part of the same culture.

https://www.theguardian.com/global-development/2022/sep/15/volunteer-firefighters-lebanon-wildfires-akkar-province Syrian refugees help the Lebanese community put out local forest fires due to Lebanon’s economic crisis and lack of response to the fire.
