This agreement comes after years of strained relations between the two countries under the former Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. At a meeting held near the inside border of Jordan, Jordan received over 50 million cubic metres of water. According to the Israeli director of EcoPeace Middle East, this was the largest amount of water ever sold to Jordan. It is said that due to the climate crisis there have been major droughts throughout the region that is home to over 10 million citizens.

There are many factors that have lead to the water crisis in Jordan. Some of these factors include climate change and population growth. Climate change has significantly reduced the amount of rainfall in Jordan, and there has been a spike in population growth in the past few decades which have costed much more of the water resources left. Jordan is tackling these problems by reusing wastewater, constructing desalination plants along the Red Sea, encouraging its citizens to use water conservation methods and replant trees in wetlands, and providing subsidies to farmers who use less water.

Israel and Jordan have had diplomatic ties since 1994 under the Israel-Jordan peace treaty. The cooperate in various areas such as the economy, energy, water, and national security. The two countries have also used aerial military to combat terrorism throughout the Middle East and have collaborated closely on joint projects including the Red Sea- Dead Sea Canal, the Arava International Center for Agricultural Training, and the Middle East Desalination Research Center. These two countries are an example of solving the collective goods problem, and working together closely in order to curb these problems and expand their respective countries.

Link to article: https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2021/7/8/jordan-israel-agree-to-water-deal-more-west-bank-trade Israel and Jordan have reached a deal for Israel to sell water to the water-deficient country of Jordan.
