Netanyahu is the country’s furthest right prime minister yet, and even thought he was voted in by Israelis, his approval ratings are crashing; a whopping 74% of Israelis state that they think the Israeli government is functioning poorly, and tens of thousands are taking to the streets to protest the new policies. This reformation of Israeli government functioning is seen as an “existential threat to Israeli democracy.”

In my opinion, this consolidation of power was reminiscent of the one that Erdogan implemented in 2017. When presidents are attempting to switch democratic countries into authoritarian ones, have to go through this phase of policy-change and centralization of power. In Turkey, with Erdogan, it was through referendum that the people voted on. But in Israel, the population is largely against this, with over a hundred thousand protestors in Tel Aviv alone. If Netanyahu follows through with this and essentially removes checks and balances from the government functioning, he would lose many supporters and lose a chance at reelection.

This relates to what we’re doing in class right now because I used comparative government to compare the situation in Israel to the one in Turkey.

https://www.reuters.com/world/middle-east/tens-thousands-join-protests-against-israeli-judicial-overhaul-2023-05-06/ This marks week 18 of Israelis protesting prime minister Netanyahu’s new policies which removing checks and balances and centralizing executive power.
