During the most recent G20 summit in New Delhi, topics of global welfare, climate change, and energy were talked about amongst the EU, the AU, and other sovereign countries. Among the many announcements, Europe declared a massive rail project crossing India and the Middle East. In efforts to increase the economic productivity of that region, the United States has stated its willingness to help build the infrastructure needed to quicken trade between Afro-Eurasia and improve the low-income countries of the Middle East. The efforts are brought up amidst China\u2019s expansion plan known as the Belt and Road Infrastructure Initiative. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For a plan to improve the Middle East, it contains many good ideas for connectivity and development. By having the G20 member countries contribute to this plan, it would improve relations amongst the Middle Eastern countries, especially those that are not currently in good relations with the US. This project could turn a new leaf between the Middle East and the West by developing that region as opposed to continuing its reputation of war and conflict. There\u2019s reason to believe that the US might not follow through with the initiative or lessen its position in it, as meddling in the growth of other countries might be seen as unnecessary for politicians and citizens in the United States. While there are no outright claims of slowing down China\u2019s decade-long work to connect Afro-Eurasia, halting their expansion over western Asia has been a concern since the project\u2019s start in 2013. It\u2019s evident that the West has concerns over China\u2019s influence on global trade, and conceding territory from crucial trade partners could be deemed bad for our economy in terms of shipping or manufacturing. All this occurs while tensions lie somewhat still with the Cross-Strait conflict. Infringing on any part of China\u2019s expansion and economic pursuits could potentially be seen as an act of aggression, and entering into more conflict with one of the largest, most powerful countries in the world might not end well. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In class, we\u2019ve spoken about the influence of MNCs and IGOs that can be considered actors on the global stage. Because of Saudi Aramco\u2019s status as an MNC and IGO, it must be noted that the project has great emphasis on introducing renewable energy sources to the region, something that is fairly new for them considering their dependence on oil and gas from Saudi Aramco. While the transition will certainly not be instantaneous, it\u2019s tough to see what the future of Arabian oil reserves will look like as the world shifts from nonrenewable energy to renewable energy considering Aramco’s affiliation with the Saudi Arabian government and the global economy.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
