The group currently consists of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, and has invited six more nations to join. Four of the prospective countries are of the Middle East and North Africa: Saudi Arabia, Iran, Egypt, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Since the extension of the invitation, the UAE has accepted, Iran and Egypt are expected to, and Saudi Arabia’s response is still pending. The countries involved argue that the expansion would lessen the dominance of the United States and allow other countries to emerge on the economic scene.

The hesitance of Saudi Arabia stems from their relationship with the United States. In exchange for access to oil, the United States offers Saudi Arabia military protection. Thus, the strengthening of Saudi Arabia’s relationship with economic giant and BRICS member, China, would place a strain on its relationship with the United States. However, it would also balance the relationship, as the Saudi economy would eventually improve to be level with that of the United States. With a lot to mull over, Saudi Arabia will first consider any offers given by the United States before accepting the invitation to join BRICS.

In class we have discussed the impact that intergovernmental organizations (IGOs) have on international relations. BRICS, though relatively informal, is an example of an economic IGO. In this situation, the organization definitely has the potential to alter the inner workings of the world economy and relationships between several countries. Should the potential and current members of BRICS continue to develop their economies in tandem with one another, the value of the US dollar and the hold that the United States has on the international economy may decrease. Also, as previously mentioned, the association of Saudi Arabia and BRICS may greatly affect the country’s relationships with the United States. The possible outcomes of the organization’s expansion demonstrate the capacity that IGOs have for change.

Link to article: https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2023/8/25/analysis-what-do-brics-invitations-mean-for-the-middle-east BRICS, an economic grouping of countries, is attempting to expand itself.
