Qatar Airways CEO Akbar al-Baker said this, “We found it to be very unfair (for) our legitimate request to not be granted, especially at a time when we were so supportive of Australia.” Qatar Airways was reportedly ‘helping them (Australia) receive medical supplies and spare parts’ during the COVID-19 pandemic. Denying al-Bakers request was supposedly ‘Not in Australia’s interest’ according to King. Following these events Australian Deputy Prime Minister Richard Marles claimed that he had not spoken to King about this decision. According to King the reasoning behind the denial had much to do with apparent ‘Invasive body searches’ that was done on a group of female Australians during a stop at Doha’s Hamad International Airport in Qatar.

If King and Marles had discussed this matter would it be a problem? King as Australia’s Transport Minister doesn’t necessarily have to be concerned with Australia’s foreign relations. She has the rights of her employees in mind when it comes to this decision. Marles is very aware of the repercussions of the actions of the Australian government. Especially when it comes to relations with other nations. The disconnect between King and Marles is to blame for the decision to cut Qatar airlines off. After a conversation between the two this situation could easily be resolved. Resolving this situation should be of the utmost importance for Australian governing officials.

This disagreement could cause many problems moving forward when it comes to Australia’s relationship with Qatar, which has historically been a mutually beneficial one. Strong commercial links and deals have made it so that these countries act as international ‘buddies’. Qatar has an economically bright future and who’s to say that they don’t eventually end up one of the global superpowers. It seems very important to keep good relations with such a powerful nation. If turmoil from this situation continues to worsen it could mean somewhat of a spiral effect downward for their relationship moving forward. Is that something that the Australian government is willing to give up? Possible friendships and alliances with a potentially very powerful governing body. There appears to be some miscommunication between King and Marles, with miscommunication often coming conflict. Conflict within a national government can cause confusion and misdirection. With Qatar showing offerings of peace and mutuality with the aid that they gave to the Australian people during the pandemic it seems to me that this is a strong bond that the Qataris want to see intact. It would be in Australia’s best interest to think the same way.

Link to Article: Qatar Airways CEO says Australian Decision to Block Flights ‘Very Unfair’ Catherine King, Australia’s Transport Minister, put a stop to new bids from the Doha based airline Qatar Airways to new flights in Sydney.
