Rodney Dixon, lawyer of the children of the head of Ennahda party Rached Ghannouchi stated the following, “We have to make this filing because it is the government itself that is carrying out these crimes.” The oppressive rule of Tunisian president Kais Saied began at the end of 2019. Aggression was used by Said to bring the nation in a direction of dictatorship. During this time Ghannouchi was arrested on charges of ‘terrorism’. The charges were deemed to be politically motivated as Ghannouchi was opposed to the rule of Saied. International human rights group Amnesty International are on record as stating that Saied is taking steps to repress free expression. Amnesty’s regional director Heba Morayef had this to say, ” Decree by decree, blow by blow, president Saied and his government have dramatically undermined respect for human rights in Tunisia.”

The Tunisian economy has been in a not so secret decline since the beginning of Saied’s regime. Needless to say the direction of the nation has not been in favor of the people. “He has stripped away basic freedoms that Tunisians fought hard to earn and fostered a climate of repression and impunity.” Morayef added in her statement against Saied. High unemployment rates and severe water shortages have been a slap in the face after the Tunisian reputation of being the only democratic success story rooting from the Arab Spring uprisings has been eradicated. Economic turmoil has also played a very apparent role in the mass fleeing of Tunisian civilians.

On an individual level of analysis a power hungry dictator seems to not be a very beneficial combination for the good of the world. Luckily at this point Tunisia isn’t powerful enough to be in that situation but who’s to say they don’t become one in the future. For the good of the Tunisian people and the good of the region it would be smart to intervene, the ICC has taken steps to deescalate the situation.

Link to Article: Families of Jailed Tunisian opposition Ask ICC to Investigate President ‘Crimes against humanity’ said lawyer Rodney Dixon when describing charges and an investigation of opposing Tunisian leaders.
