After one of her matches in the Women’s Tennis Association Finals, in an on court interview, she spoke up about her feelings on the current situation. She broke down in tears talking about how she hasn’t been happy lately due to seeing all the destruction and fatalities this war has caused. Even though she has been labeled as Tunisia’s unofficial “Minister of Happiness”, this was not the first time she has spoken up about social issues in the Middle East. Her choice to talk about this in the on court interview was not a political message, but one that was for humanity. She expressed great feelings towards this subject, “I wish [for] peace in this world, I wish we could restore humanity.” After the finals tournament, she plans on donating some of her prize money to the cause. Not only is she going to donate, she plans on starting a foundation very soon as well.

I find this to be very influential because of her popularity in the world. I think this because she has talked about issues before which shows her as responsible and dependable. It is very easy to agree with her, especially after seeing the emotions she expressed. She makes very good points about humanity and peace which is important in a time like this where two major wars have broken out in the past year now. This might not have the biggest effect on views of the war, but it is important nonetheless since she is helping educate and bring together a large group of people. I relate to her opinions because how I see it, there should be some common sense that we are all people at the end of the day. Humanity’s definition is simple, yet it can help answer so many problems we have.

Relating this to what we have learned in class would be about forms of analysis, but more specifically the universalist view. You would use the universalist view or other ones like realist and pragmatist to find why a decision is made. The universalist view is that there are absolute moral principles which is what Ons Jabeur used. In her speech, she speaks about the violence and deaths of kids going on in the war to convey it is inhumane/unmoral.

Link To Article: https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2023/11/2/tunisia-tennis-star-ons-jabeur-donates-prize-money-to-palestine-israel-war-on-gaza Tunisian tennis star, Ons Jabeur, sheds light about the ongoing war between Israel and Palestine.
