In Sderot, near Gaza, ongoing rocket attacks force evacuations. The soldiers, wary of the destruction, remain focused. Young reservists, initially lively and enthusiastic, conceal their experiences, returning to civilian life after weeks on the Gaza border. A local man, active on Telegram, shares videos from Gaza, emphasizing the soldiers’ limited time outside. Despite the truce, the impact of war lingers in the soldier’s unyielding stare and the haunting echoes of explosions.

In my view, the temporary ceasefire served as a vital respite, affording both sides a moment to collect themselves amid the relentless conflict. The soldier’s steely gaze and the reservists’ contrasting emotions vividly illustrate the toll of war on individuals, even during times of peace. In a way, I believe that the ceasefire emerged as a necessary break. For communities like Sderot, constantly under rocket attacks, this pause allowed for a much needed breather and a chance to rebuild shattered spaces and heal emotional wounds among its citizens. Beyond the immediate break, the ceasefire might have offered an opportunity for reflection, which could have helped the soldiers in the IDF and Hamas figure out the root causes of the conflict. The lasting impacts could extend beyond the temporary break, as future ceasefires can provide a space for dialogue and perhaps lay the groundwork for a more enduring peace.

In class, we have discussed liberal theories, particularly Liberal Institutionalism, by showcasing the importance of international governance in conflict resolution. The conflict between the two sides (Hamas and the IDF) can be traced to Neoliberalism, as an IGO (the IDF) is attempting to set the rules of the area, which international actors (such as allies of Israel), may follow. Neoliberalism’s emphasis on global institutions aligns with the article’s portrayal of a temporary truce, demonstrating how the interests of both local and global actors converge in the pursuit of stability. This echoes the neoliberal belief that international organizations play a pivotal role in setting and upholding regulations, showcasing their influence in mitigating conflicts and fostering a conducive environment for peace.

Source: https://www.aljazeera.com/features/2023/11/27/barbeques-suspicion-and-song-as-israeli-soldiers-break-from-gaza-war In Ashkelon, a middle-aged Israeli soldier, recently returned from Gaza, sits outside a pizzeria, his gaze reflecting the toll of conflict, and locals host a feast to welcome reservists back, unfazed by distant explosions.
