The truce, initially set for four days, is extended by two days, with Qatar citing positive progress. Clashes occur as Israel releases 33 Palestinian prisoners, and while progress has been made, a Palestinian protester was killed near Ofer prison, slightly escalating the situation. The extension is seen as a positive step, although UN Secretary-General Guterres notes it may not be enough to meet Gaza’s urgent aid needs. To solve this potential issue, the U.S. Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, plans to discuss aid, hostages, and the future of Gaza in upcoming visits to Israel, the UAE, and the West Bank.

In my opinion, the ongoing negotiations and the extension of the Israel-Hamas truce signal a potential breakthrough. The release of hostages and the willingness to continue talks offers hope for a diplomatic resolution. If these negotiations persist, there’s a real chance for both sides to find common ground and address the underlying issues fueling the conflict. This sustained dialogue could pave the way for a more stable and lasting peace in the region, and the willingness to extend the truce suggests a recognition of the importance of diplomacy over prolonged hostilities. If these efforts keep up, the lasting effects could be transformative, fostering an atmosphere conducive to rebuilding, economic recovery, and most importantly, addressing the root causes of the conflict for a more sustainable peace across the Middle East.

This ongoing negotiation aligns with the Lockean principles we explored in class, emphasizing the significance of diplomatic solutions. Locke’s philosophy mentions that states are competitors that use force and compromise to solve issues, and that is exactly what has happened here, as the extension of the truce reflects a commitment to this approach. By engaging in dialogue and cooperating to release hostages, the parties involved may find common ground, echoing Locke’s belief in the possibility of achieving a peaceful social contract. Lockean principles also state that treaties can lead to security, which could happen here. Treaties such as the Oslo Accords have shaped relations between the states, and we could see another treaty put into effect which could turn the tide of the Israel-Palestine war.

Source: https://www.reuters.com/world/middle-east/more-israeli-hostages-palestinians-expected-be-freed-with-extended-truce-2023-11-27/ The Israel-Hamas truce in Gaza has extended into a fifth day as both sides continue to release hostages under the ceasefire deal, and it would seem as if it has been working, as Israel reported the return of 11 Israelis from Gaza, bringing the total freed hostages to 69.
