Riyadh also reiterated its call for permanent members of the U.N. Security Council that have not recognised a Palestinian state on the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital. They hoped to get peace along the Gaza strip and West bank. The United States has worked very hard to get Saudi Arabia to normalize their ties with Israel until the war increased in October.

The tight relationship between the United States and Israel explains the pressure of Saudi Arabia’s alliance. The United States might have assumed that their ally Saudi Arabia would just side with Israel because of the amount of control the United States could have in the middle east if they wanted to. But, Saudi Arabia has other concerns. The religions in the region are a huge factor when each country is deciding who to align with. As Palestine and Saudi Arabia are majority muslims they were more likely to side with one another rather than side with Israel and their jewish religion. This is due to the impact religion has on the country’s beliefs and actions.

In class, we talk a lot about allies and how their relationship can alter the relationships and actions around the world. The alliance between the United States and Israel has created a lot of countries to also align with Israel because of the massive amount of power the United States has. We have also discussed proxy wars. A proxy war is where another country is supplying equipment and knowledge to indirectly fight a war. Although the United States is helping out Israel it would not be considered one of their proxy wars because it isn’t their issue. They are just helping out an ally.

Link to article: https://www.reuters.com/world/middle-east/saudi-arabia-says-there-will-be-no-diplomatic-relations-with-israel-without-an-2024-02-07/ Saudi Arabia’s Foreign Ministry has said to the United States that they won’t have diplomatic ties with Israel unless Palestine becomes a recognized state with East Jerusalem as their capital.
