Their relationship grew closer after a change in leadership in Riyadh, but began to diverge around 2019 over differing priorities in Yemen, where Saudi Arabia focused on fighting the Houthis and the UAE sought control of southern yemen and to counter Islamist factions. Economic competition, particularly over the oil policies aimed at challenging the UAEs dominance in trade and aviation since Saudi Arabia has become the largest oil exporter worldwide. but despite these tensions, escalation in this conflict would lead to repercussions far beyond this region and weaken the economics of the Arabian Peninsula.

By focusing on cooperation, shared interests, and regional stability, both nations can maintain economic growth without destabilizing the Gulf. It is hard to avoid conflict since both nations inhabit the Arabian Peninsula and export the same resources. These countries offer similar fields in aviation and the oil industry. This conflict will have no lasting impact unless it escalates, maybe only within the people of the country or rivalry businesses. Overall, the government in these countries would benefit greatly from working together since they both want to increase their attractiveness as investment locations. To manage growing economic competition, the UAE and Saudi Arabia should focus on collaboration rather than rivalry, using their strengths to compliment each other. The UAE’s well established status as a global financial trade hub can compliment Saudis ambitious infrastructure projects. Both nations should seek to invest in each others business initiatives, ensuring that the success of one nation will positively impact the other. In terms of the oil policy, finding a middle ground within OPEC (Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries) is key. Saudi Arabia seeks to keep the price of oil high, while the UAE’s focus on expanding production should be balanced with long term market stability. A simple production agreement could prevent deeper conflict.

This type of conflict is in between a relatively young sovereign nation state, the UAE, and a older, well established nation state, Saudi Arabia. Saudi Arabia as a nation state began with the Al Saud dynasty, who took over the Arabian Peninsula in 1727, followed by the establishment of the Emirate of Diriyah. Saudi Arabia is an absolute monarchy, and does not have a legally-binding constitution to follow. The United Arab Emirates became an established sovereign state in 1972, and has been viewed as a newer country in global politics for the advanced businesses and cities. It is a federal constitutional monarchy consisting of 7 hereditary political units called Sheikhdoms, which are all under the governing of the Federal Supreme Council.

https://www.swp-berlin.org/10.18449/2023C47v02/

Since the so called “Arab Spring”, Saudi Arabia and the UAE have closely coordinated their regional policies, initially focusing on suppressing unrest and countering threats from the Muslim Brotherhood.
