Tensions escalated after Ethiopia’s Tigray war in 2020, when Sudan’s forces took control of Al Fashaga while Ethiopia was preoccupied with internal conflicts. The conflict disrupted trade, displaced thousands, and militarized key routes. Al Fashaga’s valuable agricultural land and resources, especially sesame crops, now fuel economic competition and Sudan’s internal war efforts. Border closures and militarization further strained the region, increasing instability and reducing economic cooperation.

The conflict began during the destructive two-year civil war, known as the Tigray war, began in Ethiopias northern Tigray region. It lead to the deaths of hundreds of thousands of people, and the war spread to neighboring Ethiopian regions, that share a border with Sudan. After the outbreak of war in Tigray, violence began on the agricultural heartland, Al Fashgaga, which is territory claimed by both Ethiopia and Sudan. Thousands of farmers were displaced causing the relations between the countries to diminish and ended in closing the border. Since this conflict is in a predominantly agricultural area, economic resources such as land and cash crops are at risk of losing value, and these resources are apart of an economic operation that connects Ethiopia and Sudan to broader regions.

Ethiopia is Africa’s oldest independent country, and is currently under a Federal Democratic Republic government, composed of 9 regional states. Sudan is a republic, and is one of Africas poorest countries, only recognized as an independent sovereign state in 2011. Sudan’s main industry is agriculture and livestock, but they have one resource that makes them valuable in a global aspect, gold. Sudan exports around 41 tons of gold each year, compared to the 5 tons Ethiopia produces. Relations in Africa would benefit from having the border crisis resolved, to protect sacred land for agriculture and limit the military presence in Sudan and along the border. The costs and risks of transporting goods have increased as a result of the conflict. Main roads have remained under military control, and has caused trade to be the biggest obstacle in the closure of the Ethiopian-Sudan border.

https://www.chathamhouse.org/2024/04/securitizing-ethiopia-sudan-border-how-cross-border-conflict-shaping-trade-and-control-land

The Ethiopia-Sudan border conflict, particularly over the fertile Al Fashaga region, has deep historical roots dating back to a century-old border dispute under the 1902 Anglo-Ethiopian Treaty.
