The bridge was opened for traffic Monday morning but did not let any cargo trucks through and has not been open since. The closing is a result of a Jordanian truck driver killing three men of Israel’s security forces. The truck driver responsible for the shooting was identified as Maher Dyab Hussein al-Jazi. In a televised interview, al-Jazi’s brother, Shady al-Jazi, stated that seeing all the killing in Gaza might’ve been a possible motivator for his brother’s actions. Sean Yom, an expert on Jordan from Temple University in Philadelphia, though, claims al-Jazi’s actions may also reflect Jordanian-Israeli tensions that have existed since the entry of Israel as a state in 1948 which resulted in a state of war between the two countries that ended in 1994 with the Israel-Jordan peace treaty.

The West Bank/King Hussein Bridge hosts a lot of trade between Israel and Jordan and is highly oriented towards the Israeli market. Due to the closing of the King Hussein Bridge, it is likely that at least a small economic crash in the industries that rely most on the bridge will take place in Jordan. This could lead to increased unemployment and increased prices, therefore leading to less consumption and increased tensions between Jordan and Israel. Even despite the now increasing tensions, Jordanian politics, (it had an upcoming parliamentary election), were not heavily elected and the polls did not change.Though, I can see the political environment in Jordan becoming strained in the near future due to the implications posed by the closing of the King Hussein Bridge.

Geography plays a key part in both the security and economy of both recognized and unrecognized states. With the closing of the West Bank crossing, (King Hussein Bridge), Palestinians will face increased migration and security challenges with the closest exit fleeing Israel into Jordan being eradicated. With nowhere to run and the possibility of a faltering economy, Palestinians will continue to find balance among a rocky and unsafe political and social environment and secure a foothold in this war.

On Sunday Sep. 8, Israel closed the West Bank/King Hussein bridge between itself and Jordan.
