A U.S. government official was charged with leaking classified information that had to deal with Israel’s plans to attack Iran, according to court papers filed on the 13th. The man was identified as Asif William Rahman and was arrested by the FBI in Cambodia earlier this week. Rahman was indicted in a U.S. Virginia court on two counts of willful transmission of national defense information. It is unknown whether or not Rahman had a lawyer or which federal agency he was employed in, however it is clear that Rahman had top notch security clearance. The charges come from the documents, attributed to the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency and National Security Agency, appearing last month on a channel of the Telegram messaging app. The documents noted that Israel was in route of moving military assets in place to conduct a military strike in response to the ballistic missile fired by Iran on October 1st. Israel then had multiple retaliatory attacks on sites in Iran in late October. The documents were only shareable within the Five Eyes which include the United States, Britain, Canada, New Zealand, and Australia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I wonder what the incentives were for Rahman to leak such data at such a crucial time. Typically it would be a money bribe, however this was obviously going to be detected. It makes me curious as to how many moles and disgruntled employees we have within our government that have such high clearance. Obviously the data that was leaked did not prevent Israel from being able to carry out strikes against Iran, however had there been more time this could have had more significant consequences. I wonder how the United States will deal with this, the article said that Rahman could very well be receiving two consecutive life sentences, however I wonder how they will attempt to mitigate this in the future. Israel obviously did not worry too much about the classified information and this did not cause serious difficulty in Israel’s retaliation against Iran. I am surprised that Iran did not do more with the information that they had, however I am sure that this information caused Iran to view Israel as more of a threat than they did before. This just surprises me that this classified information being leaked did not have more significant consequences within the Middle East.

I can see how this could very well be a potential National Security threat for the United States to have such high clearance information leaked, however I do not know how the United States could potentially eliminate\/mitigate the chances of classified information being leaked within the different federal agencies. Rahman had very high security clearance and leaked highly classified documents to Iran. I am sure that out of Iran’s national interest, this information leads to national security concerns and Iran is most likely fearful of Israel’s planned attacks, however, this could also lead to Iran taking a defensive realist approach. While a defensive realist approach is logical out of fear of Israel, this could also lead to the issues highlighted in the security dilemma. As Iran attempts to push back against Israel, this could bring in additional threats from other countries who are potentially aligned with Israel such as the United States. I also understand that Israel is attacking Iran to prevent Iran from attempting to launch any more missiles or attacks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
