The statement was issued after some youths reportedly on scooters crossed the city center in “hit-and-run” style attacks, specifically targeting Tel Aviv supporters who had visited the Netherlands for a Europa League match. Five people were treated in the hospital and more suffered minor injuries. At least 62 people were arrested. The violence was condemned by many world leaders, especially with the knowledge that these attacks occurred close to Kristallnacht commemorations. The police chief of Amsterdam Peter Holla confirmed that anti-Arab incidents had occurred as well, with Israeli supporters setting a flag of Palestine on fire. Other disturbances were also reported. The unrest grew out of control after the match, with many fans being openly attacked and pelted with fireworks as they headed to the city center. The violence in Amsterdam has thus provoked questions about safety in other major cities throughout Europe.

Europe has been dealing with antisemitism for centuries, and these are only continued incidents of it occurring. After the Israel-Hamas war began, protests and riots started happening all across the globe in response. Now that it’s been ongoing for over a year, the protests are likely going to get worse. It is certainly worrying that violence has transpired in Europe, especially so close to the Kristallnacht commemorations. While it looks like other cities have not been experiencing the same thing, it feels like only a matter of time before these aggressive measures happen elsewhere.

Now that Amsterdam has been attacked, it’s more than likely that it, along with other major European cities such as Berlin, Rome, etc., will increase police presence near stadiums or in city centers and monitor games closely to ensure nothing happens. Football(or soccer) games are of course a major cultural tradition across Europe as well as elsewhere, and I can’t help but wonder if attendance for games will lower as a result, even if there’s only a perceived threat of violence. Using a liberal theory approach to this, someone who subscribes to that viewpoint would likely say they cannot condone violence, but protests should be allowed because protecting individual freedom is the thing that promotes the most peace in the world.

The Dutch king has made a statement saying antisemitism will not be tolerated after violent attacks occurred targeting Jewish people in Amsterdam.
