The deal which calls for a cease fire, returns Israeli troops to there side of the border, and ends Hezbollah’s armed presence in Southern Lebanon for 60 days was approved by Israel late Tuesday night. To ensure the groups follow this agreement UN Peacemakers were deployed to the region and an international panel, headed by the US, would monitor both sides. However however both sides are still weary of the deal; Israel demanded the right to act should Hezbollah violate its obligations(although Lebanon refused to write that into the deal), they also stated that if the UN Peacemakers fail to enforce the deal they will have their military strike Hezbollah, and Hezbollah leaders have said “the group’s support for the deal hinged on clarity that Israel would not renew its attacks.” Anf finally, although this deal may calm violence in that region for a time, it has little effect on the much more lethal war between Israel and Gaza. , where a cease fire is yet to be brokered.

A day after the war began in October 2023, Hezbollah had begun to fire rockets into Israel to show their support for Hamas. Hezbollah pledged that they would not stop fighting until there was a stop to the fighting in Gaza. However with this new deal made we can see that they have reneged on there previous statement. This is a prime example of national interest and how it can shift over time. When the war had started it was in Hezbollah’s interest to help Gaza. That is clear because no group joins a war where there is bound to be loss of life without motivation and something in it for them. However now that this has gone on for more than a year, and Hezbollah has lost so many including there leader, we could be seeing their interests shifting to protect the rest of the people within their group. This shows that everything state and no state actors do are relative to the positions they are in. Now the Hezbollah is becoming tired from the long war they are choosing to protect themselves more than getting involved in war-which is a shift in natural interest.

Link to article: https://apnews.com/article/israel-palestinians-hamas-lebanon-hezbollah-ceasefire-3ed296f8317ecaa89c4e3548c75c9602 At 4 a.m. on Wednesday November 27, 2024, the US and France borkered deal, a 2 month ceasefire deal between Israel and the group Hezbollah that resides in Lebanon, took afect.
