On December 3rd, 2024, a long civil war intensified as insurgents in the country have taken land and the major city of Aleppo. The insurgents was able to gain and seize small towns, but also major cities and towns. The Russians have helped the pro-Syrian forces by sending air strikes in order to stop the insurgents advance further, but has caused many casualties. The Syrian government (Assad’s leadership) controls most of the major population centers and currently has control of the capital, Damascus. The pro-Syrian rebels are currently backed by the Iranians and Russians, while the insurgents within the country are backed by Turkey. The Kurdish led Syrian Democratic Forces, which is a US-backed coalition controls large parts of eastern Syria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The civil war in Syria can have major impact in not only the nation but the region and even globally as the United States has 900 troops stationed in Syria’s eastern region to guard against resurgences by the extremist groups. If this fight gets larger, not only will Syria be impacted but it’s surrounding nations as well in the region. This could ultimately turn into a larger scale event as we have troops on the ground and with the civil war happening since 2011 doesn’t seem to be ending anytime soon. Whoever wins in this conflict will have a long long impact in the region as it will either be backed by one of the major powers in the world. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Syrian government and the SDF as well as the insurgents mainly backed by the Turkish could resolve this issue diplomatically although that is not going to happen as the civil war has continued for 23 years. There was a period where there was a ceasefire through diplomacy but that ultimately ended. What is most likely to happen is the US is going to back the SDF forces and the Russians and Iranians are going to continue to help the Syrian government and prevent them from collapsing as it is for Russian national interest to not lose a communist country to the US. The Kurds that are currently the SDF are seeking a state as they are a stateless nation trying to find a country to call home. Every party involved within this conflict is a realist and has a realist view as they are always going to seek what’s best for their own country. For example the US is going to help the SDF kick out the Syrian government as they work with the Russians and Iranians. And with the US being in an unipolar state Russia is obviously not going to want to let the US gain more power as the Russians are trying to get to the top.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
