Njeem was arrested on Sunday, January 19, in Italy for charges of international war crimes, then freed and flown to Tripoli two days later. However, the International Criminal Court (ICC) has called for an explanation of Njeem’s sudden release as it had not been approved by the Italian Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni. Italy’s Foreign Minister, Antonia Tajani, argued that the ICC does not make decisions for Italy as it is a sovereign state. Piantedosi stated that the arrest was made without following proper protocol, allowing Njeem to be legally released. Senator Giuseppe De Cristofaro has condemned Piantedosi’s actions as he argues that he has made a “precise political choice.”

This article shows the divide in the Italian government as ministers from different parties with different beliefs hold office. They have different opinions on issues and due to their positions in government they can act on the opinions even if others disagree. This can create strain in the government, especially in Meloni’s party as they directly deal with the ICC. Internationally, countries can view Piantedosi’s choice as keeping Italy “migrant free” and choosing their country of international law.

Libya should continue to combat migrants from coming into Italy as it will bring stronger relationships between the countries. Italy needs to stay within the ICC guidelines as their Prime Minister is tied to the organization. Italy could fully back out of the ICC if they follow Piantedosi and his opinion, since there’s no one binding them to the ICC.

This article connects to what we are learning in class by discussing National Security. Piantedosi is trying to protect Italy’s sovereignty by stating that he does what is in his country’s best interest. He knows that Libya is protecting Italy from a mass immigration and will risk angering countries in the ICC to keep that relationship.

Link To Article On Thursday, January 23, 2025, the Interior Minister of Italy, Matteo Piantedosi, stated that Osama Elmasry Njeem was sent back to Libya because he was a threat to society.
