During Sharaa’s third foreign trip after being named interim President, he promised to eliminate all drug and weapon smuggling. Jordan has been struggling to keep drugs and arms from crossing into the country during the rule of former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, yet, both leaders stated that cooperation between the two states is essential in fixing the unstable border. Jordanian officials claim the increase in trafficking was caused by the pro-Iranian militants stationed along the border during Assad’s presidency. Jordan, fearing another government collapse, hopes for a peaceful power transition in Syria and condemns Israel for sending airstrikes to Southern Damascus on Tuesday due to its proximity to the Jordan-Syrian border. Jordan is helping to rebuild Syria and providing the country with electricity and gas.

This article is important because it shows the aftermath of the collapse of a regime. This would make it hard for both Jordan and the new Syrian government to continue to build a positive relationship. Syria should also block these groups from gaining power in the country. Syria wants to secure Jordans help in rebuilding and losing their trust will be detrimental for the new government keeping power.

This article relates to what we are learning in class by discussing Shatterbelts. Jordan and Syria are both in the Middle East which is a shatterbelt region.
