Trump has always been a very staunch supporter of Israel, as highlighted by his current strike down of many pro-Palestinian protests throughout America. Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei has stated yesterday that President Trump’s claims that the US was working towards a nuclear deal were false, and the US was aggressively working to impose sanctions/demands on Iran. Iranian leaders, who were told by Trump that there was an incoming letter prompting discussion of denuclearization. However, Khamenei has dismissed the premise coming from Washington, and claimed that any negotiations from the Americans are meant to dominate the country, not work concurrently. Trump’s second term has been marked by an aggressive sanctions campaign on Iran and Iranian oil. On March 6, the US imposed new sanctions on Iran, specifically on the oil industry. However, the UN nuclear watchdog chief has claimed that it is becoming critical that new restrictions must be placed on Tehranian nuclear activity, as their programs become more accelerated and advanced, especially as Iran continues to seek influence and power in the Middle East.

This article is important because it demonstrates a regional hegemon of the Middle East speaking out against severe sanctions placed upon it by the US. As new sanctions target firms, ships, and individuals associated with the oil industry, Iran becomes less and less likely to establish friendly relations with the US in the future. Historically, the US and Iran have not been allies, and in 2018, Trump withdrew from a landmark deal from 2015 that had placed limits on the Iranian nuclear program while providing the country necessary relief from economic sanctions. During the last administration, Biden, along with other European leaders, worked to get the agreement back on track and subsequently reestablish limits on Iranian nuclear proliferation, which did not succeed.

The main actors involved in the current situation are Iran and the US. However, Russia has claimed that it will step in to mediate new nuclear talks between the US and Iran, with the goal of warming Russo-American relations in terms of the war in Ukraine. I think, under the current administration, that the US will continue to put pressure on Iran, through the use of sanctions and other economic pressures. However, the Iranian leadership will likely continue to see these actions as acts leading to domination and bullying of the Iranian state, and will result in further proliferation and advancement of nuclear technology in Tehran.

In class, we have discussed the different types of conflict. I think that this is an example of a diplomatic row, with economic elements (sanctions). It is non-armed. Iran’s actions are retaliatory, motivated by the conflict of interests in terms of the right to sell/trade Iranian oil without sanctions, while they also believe they have the right to develop nuclear technologies. Geographically, it is classified as global because it involves two actors located on different continents. I believe it to be defensive (currently) on the side of Iran because it is retaliating against Trump’s aggressive “maximum pressure” plan for Iran. There is no armed conflict, and therefore no means beyond those considered economic.

Link to article: https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2025/3/8/bully-irans-khamenei-rejects-trump-demands-for-nuclear-talks In terms of the balance of power in the Middle East, the US has been working to increase the influence of Israel and put down rival states such as Iran.
