Turkey is preparing to deploy air defence systems in Syria in an attempt to take control of its T4, the Tiyas air base. The capitals, Ankara and Damascus, have been in the process of negotiating a defence pact since December, which would have Turkey provide Syria’s new government with air cover and military protection, while Israel views this as a potential threat. However, this deal is meant to stabilize the country of Syria as well as intensify the fight against IS, the Islamic State, which is key for the United States to consider withdrawing. Turkey’s increased control of the T4 air base will allow them to begin aerial control across the region, eventually establishing a layered air defence system with short, medium, and long-range missiles to protect against a variety of threats. This collaboration will also deter Israel from attacking, since the Israeli government has been targeting Syrian military installments since the fall of the Assad regime in December. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This article is necessary in understanding relations between countries in the middle east, specifically between Turkey, Syria, and Israel. Turkey shares its longest common border with Syria, and has been one of the strongest supporters of the Syrian opposition forces, so it is logical that the Turkish government would continue to support Syria after the fall of the Assad regime. However, Israel has continuously expanded its occupation of Syrian land and increased its attacks on Syria in order to strengthen its border as well as prevent the revolts from spilling into Israel and ending in attacks. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since Israel has already viewed Syria as an enemy and launched numerous attacks, the Israeli government could view Turkey’s alliance with Syria as a threat and begin launching attacks against Turkey and its government. However, it is possible that Turkey’s attempt to take control of the T4 air base could not only strengthen Syrian military forces and its new government, but also increase Turkey’s military capacity, therefore protecting them from an Israeli attack. It is likely that Israel will react negatively to Turkey’s newfound control of the Tiyas air base, largely due to its ongoing and constant attacks on Syria. It is unlikely that the Israeli government will be happy to be denied access to attacking a neighboring country. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This specific event can be directly related to the concept of protection, especially the protection of human rights, which has been a key topic in class discussions. It is evident that Turkey is attempting to protect the human rights of the people of Syria by taking control of the T4 air base, as upholding human rights “is based on states willingness to uphold certain responsibilities”. Additionally, prior to this, the Turkish government had been intent on preserving Syrian human rights from the Assad regime, human rights being defined as ” indivisible human rights of human beings against certain abuses from their own governments”. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
