On Monday, the Abu Dhabi Federal Court of Appeal handed down three death sentences to individuals associated with the kidnapping and murder of Moldovan-Israeli emissary Zvi Kogan in late 2024. The three suspects, Uzbek nationals, were arrested in Turkey and extradited to the Emirates. During the January trial, investigators revealed that the suspects had premeditated the abduction and murder of Kogan. The court unanimously ruled the death penalty to the three defendants, and sentenced a fourth accomplice with a life sentence. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I think that this article emphasizes the different ways that states utilize their legal system and international law as a whole. For example, countries in the Middle East, like the Emirates, are more likely to use capital punishments than Western countries such as the US and the UK. In another Middle Eastern Country, Saudi Arabia, execution can be the punishment for crimes ranging from felony theft and drug possession to rape and murder, wherein the US and the UK the worst punishment is typically life in prison. I think that this comes from the basis of Sharia (religious law) as opposed to the common or civil codes of law seen in states like France, the UK, or even Russia. Further, the Emirates viewed the murder of Kogan as a terrorist attack, which it deals with aggressively due to its “unwavering commitment to combating terrorism in accordance with the highest standards of justice and the rule of law.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In finding the suspects involved in the crime, the UAE worked with Turkey and Israel unilaterally in order to find and extradite the individuals in order to put them on trial. PM Netanyahu even stated that Israel will work to strengthen ties with the Emirates as a sign of empowered peaceful relations and the search for stability in the tumultuous Middle East. The US government was also involved, working with both Israel and the UAE in order to provide assistance in the manhunt for the perpetrators. Furthermore, Iran stated it had zero involvement in the murder of Kogan. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In class, we have been discussing international law and differences in legal codes between states throughout the world. Each state derives authority through legitimacy, and this authority allows for the creation of law enforcement and judicial bodies. Therefore, states have unique legal systems and codes. In UAE, the legal codes is heavily based on Sharia, and therefore aligns with many principles, as well as the heavy use of capital punishments on a large list of crimes. The use of the death penalty is controversial globally, and therefore is an international law as opposed to an international norm. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
