The focus point of this military build up is an atoll of the British Indian Ocean Territory named Diego Garcia. The island has preexisting British naval and air facilities, however the amount of material and manpower being shifted to this island exceeds any normal amount. The assets the US specifically has moved to this atoll is at least 6 B-2 Spirit Stealth Bombers, a squadron of F-16 fighters, a unit of A-10 Warthog Ground Attack Aircraft, as well as numerous logistical aircraft such as cargo planes and aerial refueling craft. Aircraft aren’t the only military assets the US has moved to this region, the US has extended the deployment of the USS Harry S. Truman aircraft carrier and its corresponding strike group by three months, as well as ordered the USS Carl Vinson to move into the area to maintain a military presence in the area. Both carriers are Nimitz Class Nuclear powered Aircraft carriers that can carry over 90 aircraft, ranging from F-18 Super Hornets to MQ-9 Reaper attack drones. The capabilities these ships represent demonstrates increased US focus and activity in the area. All this shifting of assets comes after Iran confirms their continuance of their Nuclear Weapon program. President Donald Trump has come out and said that there are “two ways” to prevent Tehran from acquiring nuclear weapons: a military response or “we make a deal.”

A few weeks ago Trump told Iran’s Supreme leader that there is a two month deadline to come up with a nuclear deal before a military response can and will be considered. Trump has also come out with an ultimatum on Houthi activity in the Red Sea, stating, “let there be no mistake, hundreds of attacks carried out by the Houthis, the criminals and vicious thugs based in Yemen and hated by the Yemeni people, originate in Iran, — Any further attack or response by the ‘Houthis’ will be met with overwhelming force, and there is no guarantee that force will stop there.”. Trump posted this on his truth social account, creating questions whether or not the US could be dragged into an an Afghanistan like conflict in Yemen.

This massive show of force from the United States is designed to intimidate Iran and the Iranian backed Houthi rebels. I would say that this is a terrifying thought for Iran and the Houthis. The Houthis have, at least during the Biden Administration, enjoyed relative ignorance from the US. However, once Trump was sworn in, the United States has become increasingly involved with airstrikes and naval activities in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden. This increased American presence will most likely intimidate the Houthis enough to at least quiet the situation down for a while. Iran has a very unique decision to make, if they go along with the American requests, it would be a global embarrassment. If they refuse and blow past the deadline, it could lead to military ruin. Iran is at a crossroads with this decision and only time will be able to tell what their choice will be.

This article related to the international and regional security concerns. It is also referencing change in foreign policy of the global hegemon, which usually results in changes of global organizations (terrorist, governments, etc.). In theory, with the hegemon coming back into the picture after a power change within the politics of the country, the conflicts worldwide should begin to simmer down and come to at least a temporary halt.

https://www.reuters.com/world/middle-east/us-military-announces-more-air-assets-middle-east-2025-04-01 Over the past few weeks the world has seen a steady build up of United States Military assets in the Indian Ocean and Red Sea.
